Japanese Sheeting – Tiny Ichimatsu (Checkerboard) in Dark Blue
Ichimatstu is a distinctly Japanese checkerboard print, visually similar to gingham. And, like gingham, the squares can range from teeny tiny to extra jumbo. This particular print from Cosmo Japan, is quite small, with each square measuring 1/4-inch.
While checks have been a commonly used pattern with a deep history, this particular print became known as Ichimatsu in the eighteenth century as the kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu liked to use it on his costume hakama.
